Here come real stars to fill the upper skies,

And here on earth come emulating flies,

This art series, Brilliance, centers around the unpretentious firefly. We are lucky that the South has a plethora of fireflies glowing throughout the summer months. Anyone that has lived in Atlanta knows of the beauty of the firefly or lightning bug. This series aims to take viewers on a journey from the glowing of the fireflies and the reflection of this glow in the sky to the glowing within ourselves. The use of circles and abstract shapes throughout the artwork distills the firefly and allows viewers to immerse themselves in the glow of the firefly fully.

Here on earth, we have bio illuminary beings such as fireflies, but we humans too can glow in our own ways. The past couple of years of Covid and societal uncertainty has been a source of anxiety amongst the Millenial and Gen Z Populations. During tumultuous times like these, it is easy to go inward and keep our true selves locked in a protective exoskeleton. Fireflies take the chance to dazzle every night. Shouldn’t we humans do the same thing?

Firefly Constellations - There is a common adage, “That which is above is like to that which is below”. For centuries, men and women have looked to the stars; we have sought out the heavens for answers to our questions here in the terrestrial realm. My piece Firefly Constellations turns this saying on its head. What if we look to the ‘stars’ here in our terrestrial realm for the answers to the heavens? What if we paid more attention to that which is straight ahead and right in front of us?

The second part of this series continues and modifies the “That which is above is like to that which is below” saying and will be called “that which is inside is like that which is outside.” We humans have this same ‘glow’ that the stars, the egg, and fireflies produce. Luminesce, a portrait of a woman in a state of glowing and in a state of darkness. Here on earth, we can either step in the glow or we can let the glowing egg sit idly by while we hide inside our shells.
